Creating art after a long day at work is my little slice of joy. It’s not just about putting pen to paper or brush to canvas; it’s about crafting the perfect atmosphere that lets my creativity run free. It's more about the experience of creating than than the final outcome. Here’s my quirky, happy, and totally relatable routine for setting up the mood to create.
Cozy Lighting
First things first, let’s talk lighting. Cozy, warm lights are my go-to. Think fairy lights draped around my workspace or a soft-glowing desk lamp that makes everything feel just right. Harsh overhead lights? No, thank you! I want a glow that wraps me in a hug and whispers, “You got this.” I also prefer golden or warm white lights over white lights. Lighting definitely changes the mood of a space.
Comfy Clothes
Next up, comfy clothes. There’s nothing like slipping into your favorite oversized hoodie or those soft-as-a-cloud sweatpants. Being comfy is non-negotiable. The more relaxed I am, the more freely the ideas flow. Plus, who wants to worry about tight jeans when you’re in the creative zone? I love to wear my baggy PJs and a silly tshirt, that I don't mind spoiling.
Perfect Temperature
Temperature is key. For me, it’s got to be Goldilocks-perfect – not too hot, not too cold. Just right. A little cool breeze keeps me alert, but if it’s too chilly, I’ll grab a cozy blanket. I’m all about that balance. The perfect temperature allows me to focus on what I am doing than worrying about what I am feeling.
Beverage of Choice
A cool beverage is a must-have for me. I love sipping on iced tea or lemonade. It’s refreshing and gives me that little burst of happiness. Plus, having a drink on hand means I can take thoughtful pauses – perfect for when I need to step back and relook at my work. I even like to have hot chocolate on cold days. It feels like a warm hug wrapped in a mug. Many of my art pieces have animals drinking beverages, and now I'm seeing a reason for that.
Favorite Art Supplies
I’ve learned not to save my favorite art supplies for a special occasion. Life’s too short! Using my best pens, paints, and papers makes the creative process feel even more special. It’s like a mini celebration every time I create. I try to use any new art supply I buy as soon as I buy it, rather than saving it for later. Because, sometimes that later never comes. My current favorite art supply is my beautiful glass pen, that I have to dip into ink and draw. It makes the entire process of creating so mindful.
Watching Creative Vlogs
Sometimes, I spend a evening watching vlogs of other artists while creating. It’s inspiring and makes me feel like I’m part of a community. Seeing someone else’s creative process can spark new ideas and get me even more excited to start my own project. I have a few favorites like Tiffany Tan- Apple Cheeks and Paloma Peach. Watching the joy of other artists while creating, makes me want to take time out to feel the same. It also teaches me to trust the process.
Listening to Podcasts or Music
Listening to my favorite podcasts or some ambient music sets the mood perfectly. I’m a big fan of tunes that make me feel like it’s autumn all year round. The right background noise can make all the difference, turning my workspace into a cozy, creative haven. And on other days, I listen to true crime podcasts while creating cute art, oh the irony!
Removing Pressure
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to remove the pressure of creating something perfect. Art should be fun and freeing, not stressful. I remind myself that it’s okay to make mistakes and that every piece doesn’t have to be a masterpiece.
Finding the Cozy Corner
I like to have a favorite spot where I love to create – my cozy corner. It might be a corner by the window, my favorite armchair, or even a spot on the floor with some fluffy pillows. It’s my little sanctuary where I can let my imagination run wild.
Aroma and Fragrance
Lastly, I light up my camphor diffuser. The gentle, soothing aroma fills the air, making my space feel like a serene retreat. It’s amazing how a lovely scent can transform the whole mood and make the creative process even more enjoyable.
So there you have it – my happy, quirky, slice-of-life routine for setting up the perfect creative mood. I hope these tips help you create your own cozy corner for making art, or just to enjoy art created by others. It's important to feel at peace at the end of the day and creating such sacred rituals are a part of self care. What’s your ritual for getting into the creative zone? I’d love to hear your tips and tricks!
