Understanding PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex condition characterized by elevated androgen levels, menstrual irregularities, and/or small cysts on one or both ovaries. Although the cause of PCOS is unknown, PCOS has been linked to insulin resistance and obesity. It is undoubtedly one of the most perplexing disorders posing threat to women's health, probably due to various manifestations of the disorder and lack of uniformly accepted diagnostic criteria. There is no cure for PCOS, but you can manage the symptoms of PCOS.

Higher levels of male hormones called androgens: High androgen levels prevent your ovaries from releasing eggs, which causes irregular menstrual cycles. Irregular ovulation can also cause small, fluid-filled sacs to develop on your ovaries. High androgen also causes acne and excess hair growth in women and people AFAB. Insulin resistance: An increase in insulin levels causes your ovaries to make and release male hormones (androgens). Increased male hormones suppress ovulation and contribute to other symptoms of PCOS. Insulin helps your body process glucose (sugar) and use it for energy. Insulin resistance means your body doesn’t process insulin correctly, leading to high glucose levels in your blood. Not all individuals with insulin resistance have elevated glucose or diabetes, but insulin resistance can lead to diabetes. Having overweight or obesity can also contribute to insulin resistance. An elevated insulin level, even if your blood glucose is normal, can indicate insulin resistance. Low-grade inflammation: People with PCOS tend to have chronic low-grade inflammation. Your healthcare provider can perform blood tests that measure levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cells, which can indicate the level of inflammation in your body. The new international PCOS guideline recommends a minimum of 150 min/week of moderate intensity physical activity 75 min/week vigorous intensity muscle strengthening activities on 2 non-consecutive days/week. For modest weight loss, a minimum of 250 min/week of moderate intensity activities and 150 min/week of vigorous intensity is recommended.

Holistic approach for PCOS

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome is a multifaceted condition.

  • Hence, when choosing an effective treatment option for the woman with PCOS, a holistic approach plays an important role.

  • A multidisciplinary care addresses not only subfertility or anovulation but also metabolic and psychological issues that are often associated within its spectrum.

  • A holistic care enables clinicians to avoid missing any opportunity to prevent, treat, and optimise health, so as to prevent future complications and increase success rates of fertility treatments.

Current Technical Research in the field

Hormona

In the near future, in return for $40 per month, users will have access to home testing kits for their hormones through which they will get feedback on whether they’re inside or outside the normal hormonal range for women their age. Hormona’s overarching goal is to encourage a critical mass of users to get on-board with a mission to help plug the data gap that persists around women’s by agreeing to pool data for research. Hormona’s at-home hormone tests are lateral flow, urine-based tests for three separate hormone: FSH, Progesterone, Estrogen. The three hormones it’s selected for testing were picked because they’re connected to so many different issues that we women go through They may add tests for more hormones in the future — with testosterone and cortisol being two others of potential interest.

At Home Hormone Tests

At-home hormone tests can analyze levels of key hormones that impact stress, sleep, weight, mood, and a host of other properties that make up our overall health. Because the pandemic led many to stay home, at-home testing companies saw a huge boom. According to Axios, the demand for 75 percent of Everlywell’s tests doubled in 2020. LetsGetChecked tests saw an 880 percent increase from 2019. While the COVID-19 pandemic increased people’s desire to test remotely, the convenience of at-home tests can also save time commuting to a doctor’s office.
